Gedankengang
I begin every painting with a question.
It is already there before the image appears. I know its direction, but I do not know the form it will take. As the painting unfolds, the question changes with it. Sometimes it leads me to a place I have never reached before. When one painting is finished, another question has already begun.
I work slowly.
Colour meets material. Material meets movement. New relationships emerge within the painting. They cannot be anticipated. They become visible only through the act of painting. Some remain. Others quietly disappear. Each leaves its own trace.
I follow these changes.
They often lead me further than I could have imagined. A painting grows through many small decisions, and each decision becomes clear only while the work is taking shape.
I always begin with myself.
It is the only place where I can remain long enough to observe closely. As I continue looking, memories, sensations and thoughts gradually loosen from their personal origins and begin to exist differently within the painting. I recognise them again and again, and each recognition becomes another encounter.
Perhaps these experiences are not mine alone.
They move quietly through everyday life and often pass unnoticed.
Painting holds open a place for such moments.
There, time slows.
Seeing slows.
Something that has always been present may quietly enter our awareness again.
Each painting changes my search.
And so the next painting begins.
A painting is the trace an encounter leaves behind.
